Grouse Shooting Ben Rhinnes Scotland. Stunning weather and views! We shot 8 brace. We stayed in Findhorn that evening which is the most beautiful place. 2 pubs on a sand estuary. The seals were feeding off Salmon in the sea in front of the pub. People were wild camping on the opposite beach, against a pine covered horizon. We swapped 1/2 of the Grouse for beer in the pub that night.

I am very interested in doing this. How did you arrange this shoot?

John - through Dick Bartlett. He runs and managed several moors single handed. He's a good guy.

If you do shoot with Dick, try to find out when Roy the dog handler is in Scotland. His pointers are truly amazing!

And good luck

What is the general cost of a day like the day you pictured? I have a wirehair myself. I loved your pictures!

John it's not cheap as you are paying for the privilege of being in the mountains with just a friend and very often, just the dog handler. To me that's quite special. In August the hills are covered in pink heather and the views as you can see outstanding.

I can't quite remember what Dick charged us. It was something like £120 for Roy and his 5 dogs. Then £45 a bird. We shot 16 in a few hours and it cost around £400+ each.

We've shot with Dick a fair few times and he's never let us down. He's got several moors and so you can get a change of scenery each year.

It's hard work though, trekking up and down the mountain. But I like to work for them. The dogs sometimes point a few hundred yards up or down the hill and you have to get to them pretty quickly before the grouse run. It's amazing to watch the pointers work, they cover huge amounts of ground and circle the grouse, to round them up.

When you get to the dog on the point, you walk slowly past the dog, one either side of it. You can't see the grouse in the short heather, but the dogs never let you down. They then suddenly spring from nowhere and accelerate off in any direction. Their speed is truly amazing! Sometimes a covey of a dozen or more lift. We always let them pick up speed. They can sometimes be quite easy to shoot to bits when they first jump, so we let them pick up speed and give them a sporting chance.

We also shoot grouse with Andy, who runs the North Wales shooting syndicate each year. He offers some amazing walked up and mini driven days, for a very reasonable cost, around Northern England. But he is always fully booked and so you have to make contact with him and I guess make friends with him.

If you go, do let me know how you get on.

Great stuff! Thank you so much for posting all this, I have been looking into/wanting to do this for a long time but it is very intimidating to plan from the U.S without having any real knowledge of the areas or providers. It is so great to have some first hand advise. I really appreciate it.

Dear John,

The grouse moor where someone mentions andy is the same moor I had I now have it back it produces 3 reasonable days after that its over

We have only ever had 2 groups (hardly groups of americans 2 for woodcock and 3 for a specimen hunt for the week and they got there grouse despite -18 wind chill and someone having to get back to the car.

If you require any references as to my character and how I have run shoots I am happy to supply those, sometimes the pigeon grouse woodcock in given conditions just don’t turn up in numbers or its 0 on the mountain - but to bag grouse you need to have a standard of fitness , you don’t need a misty start as its dangerous and that comes to mind on that day. as we drove up the mountain a covey of grouse were on the road !! when we had lunch 2 birds flew over the top of us !! so there there but maybe not in my patch that day 3000 acres is a 6 hour day thats it.

Yours sincerely

John I didn't realise that you were coming from the states. Feel free to find me in Facebook "Che Rudge" if you want to communicate more freely.

There are a lot of bandits out there, who can rip you off and so I can understand the intimidation. Please avoid anything with Bob Glynn and his shooting.sh sites. He's a well know con man, who has been ripping people off for years and somehow getting away with it. The reason I say this, is his websites are very strong on the Internet and he regularly brings people over from the states.

Dick is a good man and 100% reliable. We've shot with him several times. Roy is a field trial judge for pointers and his dogs are often of championship quality. Dicks days are modest 12-20+ Birds for 2 gun. But I prefer that. Remember Red Grouse are the fastest game bird in the planet and can do 65+mph on the flat. If the wind is up, they will take in the wind speed as well. I've had them coming over me at 90+mph!

If you want bigger more expensive days, Roy works on some larger estates and I could ask him?

It's worth having a chat with someone who knows. If there is no wind on the moors, which is relatively rare. The midges can eat you alive. But they don't fly and are no problem, if there is any wind around. So you will need to take Deet etc if you are out on a windless day. They also disappear as you go up the hills and gain altitude.

The UK is the only place on the planet that has massive areas of moorland and therefore red grouse. It's quite a special ecosystem and experience.

The grouse feed off of Heather flowers, blue, blae and cloud berries in the Scottish Highlands and have a distinctive taste.

So you're saying bob glynn doesn't run any real operations? and www.woodcock-hunting.com is just a fake website? Please let me know as soon as possible before i make any further steps with him... And if this is true we must do something about it, because i've been chatting with him for a while now... I also blame Google for ranking him high on search engines!

And I believe I actually lease ground for several shoots or have partnerships with people on the ground it costs me enough every year??- We have other long term lease ’s 6 miles of the River Alwen in North Wales and have a leased private 6 acre lake called Llyn Bwlch.

I don’t know where all these stories come from I must have done something really bad in my life. The last thing I want is a Facebook situation I remember going on it for 1 days, and it nearly ruined my personal life ----- to much technology handled by people with little inside to a good old fashioned conversation, and yes on our SSSI Grouse moor we will shoot it 3 times august 1 day September 2 day and October 3rd day and starts at a sensible cost for all days - as for my land in anglesey its by far the best mixed wild bird shoot for woodcock snipe and duck some pheasant as well that you would go a long way to find records are kept as its shot every 2 weeks and it averages 35-50 shot birds not lifts Shot? thats a good day in anyones book, and we have deer stalking hard to beat over multi areas either heavy subsidised or free in membership or joint lease with another single co - lessee.

We have nothing to hide and we do make cock ups or the grouse, pigeon or woodcock don’t turn in big numbers up but thats about as bad as it will get with us. I can’t understand anyone badmouthing a wild shoot if the ground is there and you book in advance its what happens on the days its not a pheasant shoot guys.

So thats my say Youseff asked for a pile of references from us he got them and he is more than happy we run a bona-fide operation and if anyone else thinks I don’t just get in touch being so 'high profile’ my web sites are easy then to find I guess.

Kind regards and happy fishing and hunting to all.

That should have read distinctive taste.

And do stay or visit Findhorn if you are shooting in that area, is a stunning little place!

There is a lot of stalking for Red Deer as well. Red deer are similar to the US elk, but a bit smaller.

Bob,

I cancelled because I received a phone call from a friend who knows and had worked with you, who warned me off.

I have met several since who know you well. I was told a story of a couple of European farmers who had been abandoned at a pub. One nearly in years, they had saved a long time for their trip and you didn't show.

My best friend also paid £800 to join your deer stalking syndicate. When he followed the instruction and phoned the farms on the syndicate, they either didn't know you, or he was told that you didn't have access to the farms. He never found a single farm in our part of the world that he could access. Sadly he was yet another victim of your scams.

I have also shot with Scotland with some who know you.

Maybe more than 7 or 8 a dozen or so people are wrong, but I doubt it. I have never met anyone who has had a positive experience dealing with you.

How did you know that I was referring to a booking in North Wales?

Bob, I am friends with 2 people who have worked with you. Had several a night drinking beer with Pete and others.

My best friend was ripped off by you. He's someone who has contributed to this site.

Anyway folks, if you want a good honest person to shoot grouse with, speak to Dick. We've shot with him for years and he's never given us a bad day.
